Important abbreviations used in freight forwarding
EXW
Ex Works – From the Factory
The SELLER notifies the buyer of the shipment dispatch and collection. The buyer bears all costs and risks from the seller's premises onward.
FCA
Free Carrier – Free to the Carrier
The SELLER delivers the goods to the named carrier at their own expense, transferring responsibility to the buyer at that point.
FOB
Free On Board – Free on the Vessel
The SELLER bears all costs and risks until the goods are loaded on board the vessel. After that, all responsibility passes to the buyer.
CFR
Cost and Freight – Cost and Freight Included
The SELLER delivers the goods to the port of destination, cleared for export, at their own cost. Risk transfers to the buyer upon loading.
CIF
Cost, Insurance & Freight – Cost, Insurance and Freight Included
This differs from CFR in that the SELLER also arranges cargo insurance on behalf of the buyer – covering door to door.
DAP
Delivered at Place – Delivered to Destination
The SELLER delivers the goods to the buyer's or consignee's premises. All costs and risks remain with the seller until the goods are ready for unloading.
DDP
Delivered Duty Paid – Delivered with All Duties Paid
This differs from DAP in that the SELLER also handles and PAYS all import licenses and customs duties. This represents the maximum seller responsibility.
